    Use the white target on your gamepad when a larger monster is around, then tap L to target.

    When a monster is near, tap the lock on button on the touch screen and tap L to lock on.

    Keep in mind that the lock on is not the same as Zelda where you can keep locking on by holding it.

    only lock on is the camera. you'll have to line up you attck your self i'm afrade. sorry.

    You press the ZR button to choose a large monster target then tap L once to temperarily lock on.
