I think you have to buy a lot of fertilizer and plants from the garden store to get the golden shovel from what I've read.

The only AC I haven't played was the original Japanese-only N64 game.

Same here. I have a PS3 though, so at least I can play Project Diva on that. Because of my critical family members, I would've preferred the 3DS game though.
