The idea of cartridges is nice, loading menus would be so much more tolerable, especially with todays hardware. Loading speeds on home consoles seem to be getting longer instead of decreasing in some games. Though in terms of public appeal, people would dismiss cartridges because they associate it with the 80s/90s which a noticeable number the people of this time seem to not want any interest in.

If the memory capacity issue would be fixed, then yes, absolutely!

I've been reading all the comments on the positives and negatives via NeoGaf this morning. I'm all for it happening. Hopefully it's true!

Back to the N64 and GBA, cartidges could store several MBs, but no more than 100 MB. Today, 100 MB is not a lot. We're using DS/3DS cards for games and SD cards in a more general way. Both are kinda used like cartridges and the latter can reach very high capacities (i.e. more than 100 GB). I don't think it's a "return to the past" with the use of cartridges/cards as a support for NX games.

Yea specially since the Blu-Ray Discs i believe can do 50 GB only for a dual layer disc but SD Card Cartridges can do TBs. But ofc the NX would have to be powerful enough n spacious enough to handle em.

This is not only a matter of power, it's more technical. A system can only handle certain types of supports, according to their own file system. Hard drives, DVDs, SD cards, etc... use different file systems. Example: The 3DS can handle SD cards whose file system is FAT16 or FAT32. SD cards that can store up to 32 GB have those file systems by default. FAT32 theorically allows up to 2 TB.

In case you're curious, there are now SDXC cards (i.e. SD cards that can store more than 32 GB). Their file system can handle up to 128 PB (about 128,000,000 GB, which is massive!), although 64 to 512 GB cards are quite common.

So you can get something like the Final Fantasy 7 Remake all in ONE cartridge?!

Yes. By the way, I'm not sure if the term "cartridge" is correct now. They look more like cards than cartridges, but that's just me.

Cartridges are like motherboards you stick into your console. The 3DS games are like solid state. They aren't the same thing. But if Nintendo did start using solid state on their home consoles every one would call them cartridges regardless.

Compared to Discs Cartridges are quiet limited in data. (An SD Card is a Flash Memory Format, not a cartridge. Just to make that clear.) Besides Discs can be (and are) made of plastic. For cartridge you need more expensive materials. So from my sight of view it is very unlikely that the NX will have cartridges.

But still then you don't need expensive materials like Platinum, Gold or Palladium. For a cartridge they are essentially. But not for a disc.

Hmm i can see this being more like inconsistent tiers of Cartridges i can see NX games varying on price. Cus Nintendo has access to all kinds of storage w these cartridges.

Also Nintendo did say they wanna do more of the 40 dollar thing like w Captain Toad or Kirby: Rainbow Curse. They may try n do that w NX
