What do you guys think of all these new classic inspired indie games?

I am not talking about the ones that borrow an element here or there, I am talking about the ones that are almost the exact same game as our classic favorites. I am talking about 3 in particular: Yooka-Laylee, Freedom Planet, and Mighty No. 9. What do you guys think?

  • Also, this isn't just nostalgia talking here, as I just got into Megaman about 2 years ago...It just doesn't strike me as original enough..I dunno, I might(y) pick it up later on and see if my opinion changes.. On an unrelated note, I wonder why the guy who is making this game let go of Megaman without a fight..it's a shame, I kinda feel bad for the guy that he has to rip off his own game.

  • I think indie games need to move on from the retro stuff. Let Nintendo and Activision keep beating their respective dead horses. Indie games should be unique concepts that the big companies are too afraid to try, not constant reminders of the past. Granted, Shovel Knight was damn near the best game I've ever played, but for every indie Shovel Knight there are 20 "pixel" shovelware games.

  • Also, on an unrelated note, since Mighty No. 9 isn't turning out so nicely in my eyes, I decided to make (er..conceptualize and draw..) my own game inspired by my favorite Blue Bomber. It strives to be different from Megaman in that the characters fight using punches and kicks instead of blasters.

  • I like seeing games like Shovel Knight and The Deer God go above and beyond in the art department. Shovel Knight manages to look amazing despite using a slightly modified NES color palette and resolution. Unfortunately, you see too many indie games going the "retro" route because they're too lazy/don't have enough money to make their game look good.

  • Also, instead of switching between weapons like in Megaman, each boss you defeat gives you a part of a super suit and a new attack you can perform. In addition, there are 2 playable characters that get different attacks and parts from the bosses. There is a boy who gets stronger attacks, and a girl who gets faster and more agile attacks.

  • Lastly, I aim to stuff as ych personality into every character as possible, making even the boss characters fully fleshed out individuals...OK..I am done, sorry for rambling.

  • Also, yeah I agree that if you are gonna go the pixel route, you better have a good game to back it up.

  • I feel what you said about Inafune having to reboot his own dead franchise. I worry that Hideo Kojima will end up having to do something similar to satisfy the appetite of hungry Metal Gear fans upset with Konami's inevitable poor handling of the delicate franchise. I got really off-topic there, but it kind of relates to Capcom+Mega Man.

  • Freedom Planet, still a better Sonic game than Sonic Boom.

Just saw the new Yooka-Laylee trailer, and it looks AMAZING. It looks like more of a Rare game than actual Rare games do these days. Really hurts that it's been pushed back to 2017 now.

  • @BCH I know! It looks so good! I hope it gets many sequels...the 3D platformer genre must'n ever die! *sigh* Seriously though, It's probably my favorite game genre and it's running out of steam fast. Hey, anybody seen A Hat in Time? That looks pretty good!

I could easily see Yooka-Laylee being the start of a glorious new franchise. I find it impossible to believe it won't be successful.

  • I should hope so....I actually remember them saying something kind of peculiar earlier on..something about making s large franchise out of it, and giving some of the enemies their own game?? Feel free to correct me on what they actually said, cuz that's just what I remember.

I don't know about the part about giving some of the enemies their own games, but I certainly hope the first part is true!

  • @Rine Glad to know I'm not the only one that thought Shattered Crystal was decent. Fire and Ice should be better because it is more inspired by the classic games and exploring is optional.
