Why do people want the number of a franchise's reps to be determined by it's success?

If Pokemon's sales suddenly drop majorly by the time next Smash comes, would you want lots of Pokemon reps to be cut?

    I honestly don't mind who comes to smash bros. as every character is fun to play in a way. To answer your question I would NOT want a pokemon character cut if sales decreased.

    People think just because Mario, Pokemon, Zelda and FE have the most reps, means it matters how successful franchises are (FE is popular in Japan). They have the most reps because billions of people wanted their characters.

    It's more about popularity than success I think. The thing is, most people wish for a broader representation of Nintendo as a whole, either by expanding the representation of smaller franchises (like F-Zero, Metroid or DK) or by adding another franchise into the fray (such as Golden Sun or Custom Robo). That's also the reason for the initial resentment towards Corrin, since FE got 2 DLCs in.
