It's hard for me to take that seriously now that I know he knew the truth about the avatar's heritage from the start. Probably just saying that because his other siblings are around but really, why must he lie like that?

For step- families, like adopted families, it's not the blood that make them whole, it's the bonds that are made. Ryoma probably didn't want them to be heartbroken or he didn't want them to know the truth.
