What Tips Would You Give to Newbies? (Group Help Discussion)

I'll say this: - Choose a character(s) that fits your playing style instead of using characters that are the best (Unless you like the character go nuts). - Don't spam the same move over and over. It weakens it if you use it too much (Staling) and players will get used to it and start counterattacking. It's better to...

  • ...mix it up than to repetitively do the same move over and over again. - Guard at the right time to do a perfect shielding. This way you can immediately get out of shield and do a grab, attack, or do a smash attack! - Throwing smash attacks after smash attacks is a bad idea. It leaves you wide open for punishing blows from your opponent. So limit it's use until you really need it to...

  • Your tips are actually important if your new to the game. I would also add: Learn to grab. Grabbing is a really good options, as it starts long combos and may KO your opponent. Rolling is not the best way to move. This is really common from newbies. Rolling has invincibility, yes, but it's extremely predictable. It's much better that you jump instead of roll.

  • ...seal your opponent's fate! - It's best to sometimes delay your smash attack by holding the attack button before letting it go. It's a good way to give your opponent a false sense of hitting you directly. And when this smash attack lands and their health is high, it will be the most satisfying KO you ever have! - Don't be a jerk towards your opponent (Unless they deserved it). Your...

It's better to be respectful than to be that random jerk online. - If you get launch away from the stage, do everything you can to get back to the stage. • ...smash you down to the abyss! - Lots of characters have meteor smash moves. Go to training mode and experiment with the character you like! - Don't get too cocky my little novice. There's a reason why they say "Overconfidence is the greatest enemy that every smash player have to deal with!"

  • - Meteor Smashes, like it's smash attack brethren, is also punishable if used incorrectly. So don't use it all willy-nilly! - Practice, Practice, Practice! And more practice! Training mode is a perfect way to learn your favorite characters! If you don't know the basics of Super Smash Bros., watch the how to play video to learn the basics! - Use the environment of the stage to your advantage.

  • I would also add : 1. Don't immediately use your double after you are knocked off. Recovering low is usually the best option and makes others nervous to edgeguard you. Simply time an airdodge/attack to stop them. 2. Learn to play the patient game. Characters such as Fox have great frame data (fast moves). Waiting until your opponent makes that one punishable mistake is key.

  • Don't camp. It makes your opponent angry and it's predictable. Rolling is a good idea for trolling, (#rhymes) but jumping is better to avoid attacks. Also, use damaging moves often and save finishers for the finish. Some moves got high knockback but little to no damage.

  • Also, if you keep losing, don't give up! Except if others calls you n00b.

  • If you're struggling against a certain character, take some time to try learning how to play that character, so you can understand their weaknesses.

  • Here's mine: -Don't always charge at the opponent, even when the match starts. That could leave you much more open to their attacks. -Don't always block. Opponents will at some point try to grab you. -Don't use the same attack pattern over and over. It grows stale after a while, causing the opponent to punish.

  • For some reason I keep confusing myself with the Wii U GamePad's shoulder buttons when I want to shield or dodge... That is something I need to work on, and to apply to beginners.
