    Hero Mode in the newer Zelda games doesn't give you hearts in the overworld. It's like that, except as a major part of gameplay and not just as a part of a hard mode. Given the name "Breath of the Wild," they clearly want you to use the resources of the wild instead of just having hearts magically appear.

    Those are not necessary traditions in the Zelda series if you think about it. Now, if Nintendo tried to release a mainline Zelda game with either puzzles or combat removed though... that would not be a Zelda game.
