New to online Smash, I need help!

So I'm new to playing smash online against other people. But I'm struggling to do well at all. everyone seems to know both their characters and movesets, and the basics (teching, shielding and dodging well, spacing, zoning, etc.) a lot better than me, no matter how many guide videos I watch I find hard to grasp in the chaos of an actual match.

  • Unfortunately, the only advice I can give you is to continue to practice. Sometimes you have to lose matches to understand how to play matches.

  • Is it your first smash bros. game ? You don't have to worry about this, it comes with time and training. You learn the theory, but to do it well in a fight, you'll have to practice. That's hard and long, but that's part of the progress. It's normal to have difficulties at the beginning, you can train against bots if you don't feel ready yet to fight against the others.

  • It's all about "practice makes perfect". First, choose a char that you want to dedicate time and energy on. Don't worry about choosing a char that's considered "top tier", just any char that you really like and want to practice with. Go into training mode and set the speed to the lowest speed possible. Gradually work on those skills mentioned (techs, spacing, zoning) and increase speed over time.

  • Teching is important if you haven't learned. You use your shield button to stop you from going flying. This is helpful to stop stage spikes. Also, another important thing is to NOT autopilot. Autopiloting is playing without thinking. Watch what your opponent is doing and his patterns. Hope this helps!

  • Thanks for the advice everyone. i'll keep practicing with the character i've been playing. I just wish I could grasp how to play Marth well enough to understand the guide videos I've been following.

  • Like the others said just practice! It took me a while to get good at this game and find my main. Good luck!

  • As everyone said keep playing against all kind of people, and eventually you will learn all the matchups, the more you play the better you will get, bots are kinda usefull to practice at the beginning but the real training ground is against real people because everyone has a different playstyle and you will have to adapt all your knowledge against every different opponent. GL and HF. Keep training

  • if u are a beginer marth will be hard for you as well as jumping into a game almost every1 already knows how to play, just dont have obvious patterns in your play style and make reads based on what most people do as well as what your opponent has been doing the whole match and mastering the movement of your character takes time, go for reads and wait for openings dont look for pacific combos

  • be patient learn to space on sheild dont throw out anything to flashy because flashy stuff is usually unsave. moves that r either laggy or just unsafe on sheild dont throw stuff like that out there and dont approach often, being defensive works well in this game sometimes u gotta play lame to win
