Playable Linkle/Female Link and Zelda

I don't buy the reason. For a game that wants to break Zelda conventions, it's too hard to make Zelda a main playable character? Really? And how is a gender switch harder than moving a whole character from a different part of the Story? Overall it's disappointing that this isn't multiplayer. Doesn't even have canon companion it seems.
