Are Tier List Irrelevant or Relevant?

Hello Miiverse!!! I came to ask an important smash question that has been passed around the community since Smash Bros. first began. Do Tier List Matter? I want to see what's on every smasher's mind about the importance of Tier list. If you have an answer for this question, please answer right away. Ps. This picture represents Melee's Tier list.

  • Tiers only matter in competitive play, but it's clear that you guys don't know how they work. Tiers show what characters are best suited to win tournaments. This does NOT mean that the top tiers can never lose to lower tier characters, they are just better in general. And yes, matchups are very important, but top tiers can sometimes have bad low tier matchups (Young Link wins vs Puff in Melee.

  • TLDR: tiers matter in competitive play and so do matchups, but matchups are included in tier lists as well.

  • Oh and Luna, just because YOU think some placements are wrong and just because Kirby has one good top tier matchup does NOT mean that tiers are irrelevant.

  • Fox is still better than Kirby in Smash 4 btw

  • Here's how I think of it. Higher tier does not mean instant win. Higher tier means an advantage.

  • Ok, ok. It was just my opinion. I wasn't trying to start an argument. I guess I think that way because I'm kind of obsessed with Kirby so I can see why you're slightly angry. Everyone agree and disagree on different things. :( Sorry.

  • At lower-level/casual play? Nope. High-level matches/tourneys? They matter quite a lot. Remember that "tiers" are rankings which measure a character's success in a competitive enviroment. You doods gotta remember that lists are based off of FACTS too. These include tourney results, MUs, tools, etc.

  • Also, do y'all really think a game with 58 characters with very different attributes like fallspeed, airspeed, gravity and framedata is gonna be perfectly balanced? Really? And another thing, whenever a low tier character beats a high tier if doesn't mean that tiers are irrelevant. It shows that, skill and outplaying your opponent also matters in a real match. Tiers are not the only factor

  • The only things that a tier list accomplish is A. which Character Is most dominant and or guaranteed to get high results in tournaments B. the amount of strengths and weakness One character has compared to another and C. It's not so much what the character can do But what the player with the character they're using Can Do.

  • @Anyone who fell for the Picture The picture just shows how Tier List importance could effects people's feelings on characters. I hate to see people so sad and not play with their favorite character because of Tiers. After a For Glory Match, (I main Kirby) I was told Kirby was a horrible character and was at the bottom of the Tier list. My opponent told me to stop maining Kirby. T-T

  • They give out information about match-ups but, victory mainly depends on skill.

  • Tiers don't matter. Anyone can be elite with any character even the ones considered low tier.

  • Exact tier placings don't really matter, except in Brawl, because meta knight. What matters more are the actual "tiers" your character is in, being top, high, mid, low, and bottom. In a top vs top game, the MU might favor one, but by character strength it's balanced. We need to move away from "#1, #2, #3" rankings which basically make Smash an internet top ten list and move toward ESAM-type lists.
