    mm.. in an original species I normally look for things that indicate other species (wolves, cats, ect.) because if you think about it, if you have a species that looks like a cat and a wolf that would be more of a hybrid then a whole different species. also that it doesn't look like it could just be a sub specie. it's quite difficult to come up with a whole new specie that no one has made before

    also I look for diversity in the specie. every specie had variations, and that should come in to play if you want to make a successful and good lookin specie. (I see a lot of people have different tail lengths or ear lengths so maybe try something like different abilities. common organisms in the specie have weaker, blander abilities then rare or uncommon organisms that are stronger)

    (sorry if I'm not making sense I tend to ramble *^*) also about the bodies of the species. not all species have to walk on four legs. I like to see designs that aren't so covered in different colors that I can't tell what's going on. but also not bland. it's a hard balance I admit! but above all the biggest thing that can set an original species aside from the others is the resemblance to wolves

    I see a TON of 'original species' on deviant that look like wolves,foxes,cats,ect. I suggest doing research about species that are already real, then looking at other peoples creations. (don't copy them, but observe how they explain and convey their specie)

    Unusual, ethereal parts like floating limbs (legs, arms, tail, maybe ears) or extra body parts like eyes, tails, legs, mouths.. Also slime. Can't go wrong with slime.

    More then 2 legs and/or arms without looking to spider-like. A couple eyes, perhaps? Two heads also works. Floating limbs or a floating head? Extra is better, lots of times. Also, moss and slime. You could scrap ears and put holes instead. Lots of different ideas.
