I hate Hammer bros. So the only way to defeat it in SMB is to step on it, which is hard to do.

me too. hammer bros. are so annoying. they throw hammers at you and jump around

Actually, on some other occasions, knocking them down with shells works, so, perhaps, it is just a glitch.
