Smash Commentary #1-Samus

Samus might be written off as a low-tier character but she's pretty durable and her moves pack a lot of punch. Specifically the charge beam, when this thing goes off fully charged it's like a shotgun. Her Up B also has a lot of potential to spam players in the air. Her Up A is like a blowtorch and it's incredibly solid.

  • Her dash attack gives unexpected range and sets up great combo opportunities for the Up A and Up B. The hitbox for her Up B is unreal. I like to charge up the beam at the beginning, then continue some of the match by using normal moves, so opponents become preoccupied with those and forget about the charge beam.

  • Her grab isn't as quick as Link's and her throws don't set up great combo opportunities so I rarely use it. I like to use the missile point-blank, it just adds insult to injury on the opponent and sets up a combo opportunity for the A or dash attack.

  • I'm not saying she's without her weaknesses though. The Up B leaves you way too open if you don't make the contact, her throws send the player far away giving them ample space and time to recover, her A is too slow and not very powerful, and her down B is practically useless. But she has a great forward A in the air, though her other aerials are kind of a joke.

  • Down B can keep you in the Air Infinitely

  • I'm a player that tends to stay Grounded. I don't like being in the air, it feels more vulnerable and it's tough to time good landings against competent players.

  • I'll have to try that sometime tbh I've never really experimented with the Down B. Thanks for the info

  • Samus' grab is really slow just like her other attacks. I'm going to compare her frame data with other characters (ZSS and Toon Link), her grab starts at frame 16 and so does ZSS, but Toon Link's is starts at frame 12. I mean look at ZSS, she shares the same frame data for Samus but at least her throws lead to more combos, Samus is very limited on that. You basically described Samus as a (cont.)

  • offensive character, but more of a defensive one, with Down B she can retreat from close combat and start zoning which is good at with Missiles and Charge Shots

  • I didn't mean to imply she was an offensive character, she definitely feels more durable and strategic, her moves are slow, honestly this is what I like most about her. She can take a lot of damage but is also best when she has a little distance to grab, missile, charge beam etc. when I said point blank I should have said close, but with a little space.
