There needs to be a game with a female or nonbinary protagonist. The lack of female characters existing for more than fanservice and playing up the old, offensive, and overused "Damsel in Distress means Hot Dumb Female" trope, is part of the reason female and nonbinary players face such horrible harassment and overall stigma. It's 2016. #BechdelTest

There's already a good amount of games like that, but more would be nice.

AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE WAY ALL VIDEO GAME CHARACTERS ARE PORTRAYED AS HETEROS!!! OR HOW NEARLY ALL CHARACTERS WITH DISABILITIES ARE PORTRAYED AS HELPLESS, ESPECIALLY IF THEY FEMALE!!! THIS PAN GAL WITH LIMITED MOBILITY IS NOT AMUSED, GAMING INDUSTRY. NOT. AMUSED.

But those games tend to receive very little attention from the overall gaming community, and the characters often end up catering to stereotypes. This would be less common if more people who are not cisgendered males were creating games and receiving the same media attention given to the cis-men.

If you can recommend games with a well-writen LGBTQIA Female Protagonist with Disabilities, please do.

Actually, some are extremely popular. Just look at Metroid, The Last of Us, Tomb Raider, Zelda, ect. People always try to put the victimization on females, but that's really the case anymore. Times have progressed, so it's fine. I mean even male characters are portrayed ridiculous and correspond to stereotypes, so you have nothing to worry about.

  • With all due respect, I understand what you are trying to say but I believe that this argument does not belong on the miiverse at all let alone in The Legend of Zelda category... I think that it puts a bad taste in the mouths of anyone looking for Zelda content which in turn makes people leave. There are better places to voice your opinion but I do not believe this is the greatest place to do so.

From my experience, as a pan (I actually identity more with the q-word, but reclamation is a long process) female with disabilities, I have many things to worry about. Harassment in the gaming community is a big problem. I can't even wheel into a Gamestop without receiving misogynistic remarks.

Your problem stems from people and how they perceive you, which are addressed on a personal level between you and people. Nobody takes entertainment seriously enough when consuming it to care about a social justice message embedded in the game. We dont play games for ideological counselling, we play them for entertainment. Thus they are neither misogynistic or oppressive.

But people are. Hence your problem goimg to Gamestop. Having a disabled pan female be the hero or lead in a game wont change peoples hearts when they come across one. In fact, the whole thing just sounds so Disney, I dont think many people at all would give it much consideration.

To those whom have commented, if I may be so blunt: How hard is it for you to find a character that is your gender and race? If you have a disability, how many characters have similar conditions? Do you struggle to find characters with the same romantic orientation as your own? I am not attempting to offend anyone. I simply wish to provide a basis for understanding.

There is a proven pyschological need to have something to identify with in order feel a sense of belonging.

  • Surely you can find a character that is your gender (female) and or race (caucasian)? Also a games avatar is not meant to be a direct representation of the player using it

  • There may be a psychological need to identify in seeking belonging, but im not sure you should be looking for that in games
