    Well not really chemicals more like I put a bag of corn starch next to a bowl of water and some cat came along and wondered what would happen if he spilled the corn starch into the water and so he did and next thing you know the corn starch-water mixture evolves into a living blob of non-Newtonian liquid (which explains why they seem like a bunch of liquid at first but are then able to turn solid)

    This also explains why they are usually in liquid form and they can only stay upright in solid form for a few seconds, and why they very quickly pull themselves upright
