Question

Who is currently the best character in Sm4sh?

Now that Sheik and Bayonetta have been nerfed, I'm curious to see who you guys think is the best character in the game competitively. Personally, I think it's Fox, but I've seen many answers to the question

Fox isn't the best due to beating Cloud in the MU tons of other can counter him

Fox does have a good MU against Cloud IMO, but that doesn't automatically make him the best. I'd say that he's not the best, but definitely up in the Top 5.

My problem with ranking off potential is that your basing your rankings off assumptions and hyperbole. While if you base it off tournament results you atleast have some form of data to back up your claim. is it perfect? no. we don't have a ZeRo/Ally/Larry Lurr level of skill player for every character in the game. But it is still tangible data.

Plus I personally think the idea of basing tier lists off tournament results adds some fun to the game. If you think your character deserves a higher tier, you can start winning majors with that character and change it. making tiers evolve with the game.

I also really liked ESAM's tier list. as much as people like to poke fun at #ESAMOPINIONS he makes really good points. but he might also have some character Bias with his thoughts on pikachu ;) Fox I could definitely see being viable for top character. what is his overall matchup spread like?

Like I already said, it's hard to rank them. They all have something holding them back. However, if I had to give my opinion... 10. Villager 9. Pikachu 8. Ryu 7. Zero Suit Samus 6. Mario 5. Fox 4. Cloud 3. Sheik 2. Rosalina & Luma 1. Diddy Kong

Fox struggles a lot against Sheik, and has a slight disadvantage against Rosa because zoning, Ryu because he's a fast faller and Luigi because edge guarding and combos. Kirby's a weird case where he's not a high tier, but his combos can get around 70 on Fox, about 40 from up-tilt alone. He goes even or beats everyone else

He does have a few bad matchups against high tiers, but the fact that he beats Cloud right now is huge, because Cloud would otherwise be the best character in the game. A lot of Fox's bad matchups aren't unwinnable, either. The thing is though, he goes even with Mario, Diddy, Bayo, MK, Peach, Toon Link, Villager, Yoshi and Ness, but destroys almost every other character.

Personally, I think Cloud is over-rated. He's definitely good, but he's no higher than #3 at best. I've seen far too many people (high tiers in specific) take advantage of his garbage recovery. This is the main reason why Cloud hasn't won a major tournament yet.

I believe results are more important combined with how well everyone does in the Top 10. I believe Diddy is the best in the game as he has great rep, great results and great match-ups against the top 10. He beats Ryu, Mewtwo and ZSS whilst Sheik and Sonic are even but may beat them. However, he could struggle against Cloud, Rosalina, Mario and Fox but they are even as well except maybe Cloud.

However, characters like Luigi, Olimar and Mega Man can beat Diddy so he is counterpickable but others in the Top 10 are as well except maybe Cloud and Sheik. Here is my personal Top 10 1. Diddy 2. Sheik 3. Cloud 4. Mario 5. Rosalina 6. Fox 7. ZSS 8. Sonic 9. Ryu 10. Mewtwo Characters like Bayonetta and Pikachu are just below the Top 10.

The thing with making a tier list off of results is that it ends up being more of a measure of how good the player is, and not the character. The right balance imo is ranking off of potential, but using tournament results to judge that potential.

For example, I have Mewtwo at 13th in my tier list, not because of Abadango winning Pound with him, but because of how Abadango showed us what Mewtwo could do at Pound, or how Komorikiri showed us how good Megaman actually was, or how iStudying showed us Greninja's insane footstool locking combos.

I wonder if we may end up with a situation where there isn't exactly a number 1. but instead its a rock paper scissors with characters. where say as an example (but don't take this as a serious claim about the matchups of these characters) the top three characters are Cloud, Rosa, and Diddy. than Cloud beats rosa, Rosa beats Diddy, and Diddy beats cloud. but thats just speculation.
