    Well, he's technically not a Nintendo character. He belongs to Sega. Sonic got in because he's iconic, but this game is still mostly focused on Nintendo characters. The developers are careful about not adding too many third party characters as playable. In fact, no third party character has been playable in Smash until Brawl.
