What's the preferred deck balance for this gen 1 format? I just use 14 pokemon, 11-15 energy and use the rest of the space for trainers. I'm curious on what line up you guys are using.

  • I use 24-26 energy (you need more for fire types), roughly 10 trainers, and the rest pokemon. I also stick with just one type per deck and some colorless. My best deck is with Venusaur and Exeggutor combo. Use one type that works well against the gyms. Except the Zapdos elite four tainer, this strategy works great.

  • With the pokemon, only have one or two (third stage evolution cards). For a pokemon like charmander, have 3 or charmanders, 2 charmeleons, and 1 charizard. Try to get a pokemon trader or computer search. They're the best trainer cards in the game. At least half your pokemon should be first stage pokemon. Energy cards are very important and nearly half your deck should be them.

  • In my opinion, you shouldn't be running more than 20 pokemon or energies unless your deck demands it. For stage 2 pokemon, run 3-4 Basic (Weedle), 2-3 Stage 1 (Kakuna), and 2-3 Stage 2 (Beedrill). Run 2 main Evo chains and have a few standalone Basics for stalling (Chansey) or utility (Kangaskahn). Trainers should be more than 1/3 of your deck since they give you consistency.

  • For example, my current deck uses around 27 Trainer cards just for consistency. I run Beedrill (deals 40 for 3 energy, can poison, resists fighting, and can retreat with no cost) and Dragonite (has 100HP, has good PokePowers depending on which card, and also resists fighting). This deck works wonders for me, as Grass isn't resisted by anything and Dragonite has no weaknesses.

  • I believe deck balance depends on what your strategy is, as well as how fast your deck setup is able to draw cards. You don't want your hand to be empty, or be filled with unusable cards for long periods of time. If you aren't sure how to balance your deck, you can try 20 Pokemon, 20 Trainers and 20 energy to start, test it out, then make adjustments where necessary to improve performance.
