    I'm not too sure how it works but this is how it worked for the psp and ps3, download a app on ps3 have a wired connection on the ps3 use the app then get on your psp and use the wireless connection with that and you are now online with the psp with people across the world instead of lan connection, I think it's the same with the 3ds and wii u and that's the reason why i explained the ps3 psp one

    That doesn't matter the 3ds will be feeding off the wii u for the online play because the 3ds can only do local play thats why the wii u has to use the wired connection. So the wii u is being used as the lobby connector basically

    basically the wireless function used to find wifi for the wii u is being used to communicate with the 3ds. since thats happening, it wont be able to use the wireless function to connect with ur wifi or wireless router, thus u have to use a wired connection
