    As you fight in smash,classic,or smash run.... youll encounter new characters dont worry if you fail you can try again if you keep playing.

    You have to beat certain modes with certain conditions, finish specific achievement, and/or do a lot of Smash battles. Both versions have different conditions.

    One way is to just keep doing regular smash battles over and over. Or, you can fulfill a certain unique requirement for each character. For R.O.B. you can unlock him by getting 10 rounds in Crazy Orders. I'd look up the requirements to unlock the characters on google.
