Question

I have a question. A friend told me that no matter what I did, my Pokemon would never be good enough to compete unless they were IV bred. Is that true? Does it make that big a difference? Even if I EV train them?

    IV Bred Pokemon have significantly better stats than Non-IV Bred.

    Yes and no. Overall IVs could make a huge difference, however they might not. If you're looking to really compete you would need 5IV pokemon at least(unless Hidden Power requires otherwise) in order to perform at the same level. Natures and EVs along with skill and moveset matter more, though.

    So I can keep training my Combusken, evolve it, EV train, do the same for the rest of my soon to be team, and I'm good? i don't have to fret about IVs, even against other players?

    Well... IV's do make a huge difference in overall stats, but if you have the skill, the strategy, the ability, the knowhow, etcetera, you will do fine. Well, at least, until a hacker comes in with a 6iv Lvl. 100 Shiny ??? type Arceus... until then, you will do ok!

    I'm not sure about not fretting, but if you can't IV breed and you'rejust starting it's fine. But IVs are a much larger deal the more you dive into the scene.

    As someone who has several years of competitive experience, having perfect IVs isnt necessary but it helps a lot. As long as your pokemon are EV trained properly, you'll have a chance. Having good/decent natures and several perfect or near perfect IVs are just a bonus though getting good/decent natures are much easier than perfect IVs. Pretty much everything what Gegowyy said is true
