    And doing the actual stage (that required Yoshi getting there to unlock it) was even MORE annoying!

    oh my god you reminded me You had to jump on a boat, wait like 5 minutes, jump to another boat, wait another 5 minutes, get on the island and spray the pipe with juice before Yoshi ran out of juice and died? Also, if you missed the jump between boats, (very likely due to Yoshi's weird jumps) Yoshi died, so you had to start all over again! This game made me mad as a kid. Still loved it.
