First off, Thank you for joining us Mr. Hayashida! I think the NES REMIX Pack, which includes NES REMIX I and NES REMIX II on one disc, is a great game for the holidays! You can pass around the controller with your family and play games remixed from classic NES games! Also, Ultimate NES REMIX for Nintendo 3DS launches today, so here’s my first question: Did you create the 3DS version because there was a high demand for it?

Hayashida: "That’s right. After NES REMIX launched for Wii U, we’ve received an unexpected large number of requests for a 3DS version. To be honest, I thought the short fast-paced challenges in this game are perfect for hand-held consoles. However, the Wii U’s machine power enabled us to do many things in this game, so we thought this game will be impossible to operate on a 3DS system. This may sound a bit technical, but in order to faithfully reproduce all the detailed features of the NES games, we had to break down the NES system itself to recreate an accurate and fast-reacting NES system within the game. Plus, for this game, not only did we need to reenact the NES system, but we also needed the machine power to run all of these games remixed. When we actually tried to make it for 3DS, as expected, it didn’t work out at the time (laughs). After that, we tested multiple ways to get NES REMIX to operate on a 3DS system, and we finally got it to work. Actually, we were unsure if this game could be released for 3DS until a month before this version of the game was completed."

I know that the Wii U versions of NES Remix and Ultimate NES Remix are fun in different ways. Could you tell us about some of the ways that you can have fun specifically in the 3DS version?

Hayashida: "Probably the most unique feature in the 3DS version is the online leaderboards for each stage. This feature was also a popular request in Miiverse. You can compete to be the best at stages you are great at, or compete with your friends on leaderboards for friends. Not only can you see your friends’ scores on the leaderboard, but their times will also be displayed on the stage select screen shown in the picture here. So I hope some competition will spice up your gameplay. You can also watch replays of top players on the leaderboards if a replay button is displayed. It might be fun to watch replays of your friends that are really good (…or really bad?) at this game. Also, we’ve included a sped-up version of Super Mario Bros. exclusive to the 3DS version called Speed Mario Bros. This mode also has a leaderboard, and it’s become sort of a time attack challenge to clear through World 8-4. I hope those skilled players out there will have a blast putting their skills to the test!"

I can’t wait to improve my techniques on the 3DS version! It’s fun learning game techniques from challenges and basic rules for games I haven’t even played before, so it feels like I’m mastering multiple games at once!

Last but not least, I would like to have Mr. Hayashida answer some questions from Miiverse users! Q1. This question came from Austin! "How'd you formulate the idea for the NES Remix series?"

Hayashida: "My first encounter with Famicom, or NES for users outside of Japan, was when I was still a student. Naturally, I had little money to spare at the time, so I couldn’t play many games I wanted to then. This is why I played many different Famicom games I didn’t get to play back in the day at work. However, if I just play Famicom games all the time, it will just be slacking off, so I somehow justified playing Famicom games as part of my job (laughs). When I played through many of these games, I’ve struggled to get to those memorable moments that I remembered playing in the past. I thought other people may have the same struggle when they replay their favorite games too, so that is where I got the idea of cutting out highlights of games and playing them. However, just cutting out the best parts of the games will probably confuse people that have never played these games, plus the gameplay won’t feel new, so we decided to makes stages that teaches players how to play these classic games, as well as create remixed stages that no one has ever played before."

Hayashida: "It’s really hard to choose a favorite because I love all of the games in the NES REMIX, but I would say that Super Mario Bros. 3 is the most refined game out of all NES games. We’ve also included unique challenges from this game like one featuring Frog Mario, so that is another reason why I like it."

I love the Frog Suit too! The Tanooki Suit and Goomba’s Shoe from the game are also my favorites. This interview is making me want to play the game again! By the way, this game is featured in both NES REMIX Pack and ULTIMATE NES REMIX.

Hayashida: "When you are having trouble clearing a stage, you can watch replay videos of other players in NES REMIX 2 and Ultimate NES REMIX for references. Unfortunately, this feature is not included in the first NES REMIX game…but I’m pretty sure someone will give you some advice if you post a question in Miiverse! Oh yeah, we’ve posted some gameplay videos in the Developer’s Room in the NES REMIX community, so please remember to check those out too!"

The videos in the Developer’s Room are very helpful, especially when I want to try getting the rainbow rank which is better than three stars. It’s pretty challenging to use the right technique and clearing the level fast enough!

  • Q4 This question is from Keenface. Did you play the Famicom when you were younger? What was your favorite game?

    Yeahs199

  • Hayashida: "Of course! There are too many games I love, so it’s hard to pick a favorite. This may not count as a “favorite” game, but when I first encountered Donkey Kong as a kid, the in-game expression of barrels rolling down a slope was very striking to me at the time. These details may sound pretty normal in this day and age, but it was a big deal back then! So, Donkey Kong has a special place in my heart."

  • Here’s a question from Cameron. Q5. I watched the Tomodachi Wish List Video and one of the Miis looked like Mr. Hayashida. Did Mr. Hayashida work on Captain Toad Treasure Tracker?

    Yeahs211

  • Hayashida: "Yup, I am actually the producer for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. It was very challenging adjusting and checking the production process of this game simultaneously with Ultimate NES Remix. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker’s stages are all compactly filled with fun tricks and challenges, so it should be a fun game for NES REMIX fans too. Further into the game, you can attempt clearing the stages with a time challenge that appears on the stage selection screen! By the way, Captain Toad is actually not the same Toad as the Toad who’s playable in games like Super Mario Bros. 2 and Wario’s Woods, but if you’re a fan of all Toads, I recommend playing Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, NES Remix 2, or even the NES Remix PACK!"

  • Also, we actually received many requests to create a remix game for SNES, N64, GameBoy and GameBoy Advance. I’m assuming that we’ve received so many requests because we’re all emotionally attached to games that we have loved playing growing up. Many games are already available as Virtual Console, but one of the greatest things about the REMIX games is that you can quickly enjoy the highlights of each game without playing through the original game. Maybe this feature is what encouraged so many requests for remixes for different consoles! Even I couldn’t help purchasing some Virtual Console titles such as Ice Climber and Wrecking Crew after playing their featured stages in NES REMIX!
