I always see posts about "killed 10 ____, still no ____" and I'll admit I've done it myself in the past. Recently though I've found that if I accept the fact that I'm probably going to hunt 50+ monsters to get the rare I want then I'm always pleasantly surprised when I don't. I also tend to put an absurd amount of research into maximizing drop chances.

I do that now too. If I want a Los Ruby, I'll farm him for 4-5 rounds, and if I get nothing, whatever, I'll hunt Lagi for sapphires. If that doesn't pan out, hunt something else for materials I need. It's always pleasant now to get that rare item, having come to the realization you described.

Now that I have a couple of sets that I like I've been helping others farm stuff and have gotten more rares that way than any other. I got 5 diablos hardhorns in 6 hunts and I didnt even need Diablos at the time. Sure enough though I needed them later for a weapon upgrade
