I got this game for Christmas back in 1988. I had such a tough time figuring it out. I had a friend who had a friend at his school that would feed us info when we were stuck. Now people can just look it up on the internet. Makes games too easy if you ask me. Definitely my second favorite Castlevania game, right behind Super Castlevania IV (SNES).

  • Konami had those pocket books that novelized the games and gave random hints about the games. I had one for each game. Aggh nostalgia!

  • I still have those books too. Metal Gear, Ninja Gaiden, Blaster Master, Wizards & Warriors, Bionic Commando, Castlevania 2 and Mega Man 2. I need two more, Shadowgate and Bases Loaded. I also have all of the Mario Bros./Zelda choose your own adventure books. I couldn't get enough Nintendo back then. Still can't.

  • I never heard of these books. I must have them. I agree about looking things up now. When I play retro games now I never use the net anymore if I get stuck. Although some parts in old games were virtually impossible to figure out and were purposefully meant to sell strategy guides.

  • Or you could write to Nintendo Power.

  • It took me forever back then to figure this game out and beat it. Same thing with Dragon Warrior. I refused the guide even though I thought it might give me an anurism at times and committed all the stuff to memory like I thought it was the most sacred of secrets... now, with all the brain cells I've killed, all I remember is how much fun we all had and how important it seemed at the time.

  • Right on to this entire thread! I remember getting Castlevania II for xmas as well, it was magical playing it that night. That total captivation was not replicated for me until Skyrim. It was indeed an adventure to try to figure out games back then, not just a google search; invisible platforms not withstanding. Im so glad ppl still love Simon Belmont as much as me! Heres to his return to wii u!

  • i remember the choose your adventure books! "to go down this path turn to page 27" " to go back go to page 43" those books were priceless! as for this game it still brings me te most memorable nes moments ever!

  • ha! I also got this for Christmas, possibly the same year! This game and Zelda 2 were hot topics on the schoolyard, as only the kids that had the power knew the tricks.
