Is there a reliable way choose which character the CPU plays as? If there is, I can't figure it out.

    get the cpu coin and drop it on the characters you want for the cpus

    If you look on the character select screen, click the cpu sign button and you will see a cursor that says CPU on the random slot. Press A on the cursor and move your L-stick to the character you wish, and press A again.
