    Pokefact: The second generation of Pokemon games (Gold/Silver/Crystal) were actually intended to be the final batch in the series, but due to the popularity of the franchise, Game Freak and Nintendo decided to keep going. This could possibly explain the reason that Johto and Kanto are linked, and third gen games not being able to transfer Pokemon with second gen.
