  • No, it doesn't have to be shiny. Your odds of getting a shiny increase if you breed a pokemon from your region with a pokemon from another region (example, if you live in America, a pokemon from your game, and a pokemon from Germany, Spain, Japan, etc.).

  • The Masuda Method (or MMing) ups the chances of a breeding pair producing a shiny if they are from two different countries, one of which being your own. (Foreign Language Tags next to the name of a pokemon is an easy way to tell if it's good for MMing. [SPA] [GER] and [JPN] are examples.
