    Don't feel bad, we all hate them. Their stronger versions are even worse though. Once you buy bat within, you can avoid the combo if your timing is right.

    actually, the move comes in handy. your timing has to be perfect though. IF you're having trouble, I suggest playing easy or very easy and beating the game there to unlock immortal marionette. That item when equipped will automatically form random combos and even auto dodge. Though combo points will be halved when using it on higher difficulties, there's ways around it.

    You don't have to but getting the item from there is helpful. You seriously have to understand how each enemy behaves and what weapons work best. Grace and Glory are fast, so you need fast weapons to counter them. You also need to time your dodges on them or else you'll get combo'd.
