I have a theory (a Game Theory...) about how this game fits in the "timeline". Near the end of Spirit Tracks, you're asked, "When this is all over, what will you become?" by Zelda. One choice was "Conductor", the other was "Soldier". The soldier choice might've lead up to the events here. Makes sense right? Link is far more skilled than he was before thanks to his training with Hyrule's soldiers.

  • This game takes from the child timeline though, not the adult timeline.

  • But how'd Ganon come back? Recall that in Wind Waker (spoiler alert), he was frozen in stone for good by the Master Sword and Hyrule sunk with both, presumably to be never found again. Anything can change (lol Chrom) but so far it seems that Ganon can't return in that timeline. Lana/Cia knows of Hyrule's history/Triforce, but WW implies in the prologue that Hyrule (and its history) were forgotten.

  • And also, it can't fit completely on any timeline we try to put it in... It's just a fusion of all timelines in one, making sense of all historical dates and at the same time wrecking havoc with some events that one simple can't explain. But as Cole said, it's mainly based on the adult timeline.

  • child timeline*, sorry.

  • Also, Edi... At the start of Legend mode the game itself explains that Cia has been watching everything but never interfering. She didn't forget anything.

  • It's completely within the timeline where Link goes back to the past after OoT and stops Ganon from taking over, hence the Twilight Princess levels. Everything follows one line backwards from there, though Hyrule Warriors pretends the handheld games aren't a thing.

  • Hyrule Warriors isn't in the Timeline at all. It has been confirmed not to be Canon. & it CAN'T be Canon, because Koei Tecmo weren't careful enough with the characters. If you pay attention to some of the little details, the characters from past games were taken from different points in their games. That doesn't work. Also, Cia & Lana don't fit at all with how Skyward Sword set things up.

  • I feel like I need to make amends here. I heard a while back that it was said that it never fit in with the timelines they had made for the series, but had forgotten about it. However, it's that small detail that makes the big picture. This game has such a large quantity of easter eggs with great quality in each of them. One example is Volga, who is clearly a reimagined Volvagia.

  • The developers said they made Volga inspired by Volvagia's design.

  • Yeah, that is true now that I think about it. His helmet and armor gave that away, but the description for his spear is what throws me off. It says that it contains the dragon's powers. I'm guessing that the spear acts as somewhat of a conduit to channel Volvagia's power through Volga. It explains how he breathes fire, morphs his hand to make a claw, grows wings, and transforms into Volvagia.

  • The developers haven't said that Volga has a direct relation to Volvagia aside from the fact that his design is inspired by Volvagia. His weapon does say that but it could be a dragon similar to Volvagia like the dragon he actually does turn into. Cause there's two other dragons that have a connection to Volvagia, like Barba and Valoo who are possible descendants of Volvagia.

  • One clue Volga isn't Volvagia is they are different types of Dragons! Volga transforms into your standard, Western vision of a Dragon. Volvagia was a Serpentine Dragon. I've always found this debate strange.

I'll just bow out of the debate. Not because of the many disagreements I have with one or two messages in the post, but because it's a hassle now. Also, CANON OR NOT, it's fun to debate this game's place in the timeline. Oh and it was never explicitly stated it WASN'T canon. Aonuma said it was kinda like the Avengers.
