  • Dunking the ball over the goal post became illegal too, I guess when players dunked the ball before it became illegal they were already doing something wrong because it became illegal later on right?

  • Yes, but those actions certainly didn't have as large as impact on the game as learning the entire playbook of the other team beforehand had. It essentially negated any opportunity the Rams had to take the Patriots by surprise, and the entire scenario is what led to the banning of spying in the first place.

  • Except the Rams could've taped the Patriots as well, if they chose not to then that's their loss. The Patriots wouldn't know all the Rams plays either. No way can a team learn all the plays of their opponent by taping a few practices.

  • At that point, it had never been explicitly been spelled out in the NFL regulations that it was illegal; it was generally understood that a team shouldn't do that, so the Rams didn't. After their investigation of the event, the NFL found that the Rams were practicing a dozen or so new plays they hadn't used the entire season, in an effort to catch the Pats off-guard. Each surprise play failed --

  • -- because the Pats knew exactly how to prepare for them.

  • Also, whether the Rams had the opportunity to spy or not is irrelevant. The point in question is whether or not spying was a bad thing to do: all the facts indicate that it was, from the official banning of spying to the Pats being heavily fined because of it.

  • Since it wasn't illegal it wasn't wrong. Sure it was banned later, but only at that point would it be wrong to do it, not before. The only time the Pats have cheated as far as I know was during the 2007 season against the Jets. The burden of proof is on you since you say they cheated, so prove to me they cheated.

  • Just because the Pats defended some new plays well doesn't mean they cheated, that's ridiculous. Not every new play works.

  • Not all plays work perfectly, but the reason the plays failed is because the Pats watched the tapes and knew what to expect. Why did you bring that up? It in no way tries to prove that viewing the tapes wasn't wrong. Are you saying the Patriots never saw the tapes in the first place?

    Yeahs0
  • The NFL fined the Pats because of the whole ordeal. That means the Pats did something bad, right?

    Yeahs0
  • The NFL fined the Pats in 2007 after they were caught filming the Jets walk throughs. They were not fined for filming the Rams and there is no proof of them doing that. You said it yourself, not all new plays work, so maybe that's what happened.

  • You said earlier that the Pats DID tape the Rams, and that it wasn't against the rules. But now that that fact isn't very helpful to your case, you claim the opposite. Please make up your mind: did they or didn't they?

    Yeahs0
  • Well I don't know for sure. I'd like to believe that they didn't, even if they did though it wasn't illegal and the Rams could've done the same. There is still no proof of them doing it, unless you think since the Pats stopped some of the Rams new plays they must have cheated.

  • They were going to be investigated, but as soon as they found that out, they destroyed all their records. Oddly enough, the NFL dropped it after that, but not before slapping them with a hefty fine for the destruction of the tapes. Since it wasn't specifically spelled out in the NFL rules, the Pats probably thought they found a major loophole. But the whole 2001 victory feels... lowbrow.

    Yeahs0
  • How old were you in 2001, by the way? If you think I'm prying too much, you don't have to answer. :)

    Yeahs0
  • Well I guess you have a decent reason to hold a grudge. We'll just have to agree to disagree here. I was pretty young in 2001 btw.

  • Okay, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't arguing with a ten-year-old...they're all over miiverse. :) I guess whatever happened before the 2001 superbowl will remain a mystery. Each side of the argument has enough evidence to make each possibility seem likely to each team's respective fan base. I hope you enjoy watching the game on Sunday. Here's hoping it's more exciting than that Colts game.:)
