    They have to invite you to their toy box, or if you want them to play in your toybox then you can invite them. To check your invites, pause the game, go to online/multiplayer, then veiw invites, there might be some invites but if there arn't then you can message them on miiverse. If you want to invite them to your toybox, then its the same steps exept this time you go to invite friends & select...

    sorry ran out of room, anyway as i was saying, select the friend you want to invite, if they are online then there will be a white circle next to their nintendo id, after you select someone to play, they should leave a request. Trust me, its a lot more simple then it sounds, i make things sound really complicated.
