[ Nintendo: YouTube Creator Program Update ] Recently Nintendo announced a new 'Creators Program'' that would gift creators 60% of ad revenue for approved videos & 70% for entire channels. Nintendo now states that it will not approve channels that feature games not on its 'Whitelist' and has apologised for the lag in the approvals process caused by a high volume of applications. * More inside.

  • Due to American Copyright laws, wouldn't youtubers be able to play a game solely to give critique while playing them? I don't know about Japan, though.

Yeah, I agree, that's a pretty stupid move on Nintendo's part. I know very little about making content on YouTube, but if I made videos, and assuming that's not exclusively did for a living, I would rather put up the Smash content for me AND my viewers and perhaps receive a little less money than be a part of the program. Regardless, Nintendo is still shooting themselves in the foot with this.

  • Why don't all the Youtubers that want to start in this program make an account just for this and then have a separate one for all the other games and stuff? Problem SOLVED.

As much as I'm confused about this, this feels like yet another example of how ad-revenue is a tough business model. There's already been criticism in music streaming since so many users of Pandora and Spotify use it for free, and the royalties that artists get are very small. I imagine YouTube is similar already, so I'm not sure how the program would cut into that.

  • This so stupid. IT'S FREE ADVERTISEMENT!! Why make it annoying for people to advertise you!? And some people make doing this their only job! How is this fair to them?

  • @yan-sid Yes, but reviewers only show small clips of the game to accompany the review, while a let's play video shows pretty much everything. That's why reviewers are allowed to do it, just so long as it's an actual review.

  • I can understand it. You can say what you want, but PPL earn money with the products of Nintendo, so Nintendo should get something. If they don't, it's still for free (60% of nothing is nothing) and Nintendo have all rights on their game, so for me it's absolutely ok.

  • Did you guys watch Nintendo Enthusiast's video about it? It really hit the nail on youtubers there. (be careful, strong language)

  • A partnership is both people committed to support each other. You have to be committed to support the partner, like not supporting the partner's rivals. Besides its "OPTIONAL" to join the program, not permanent or necessary.

  • @Folkloner would you believe that what you said was all on its TOS? People just don't read the fine print you know. Media is just now reporting this too but it was all there since it launched

  • I get why Nintendo dont have their latest games on the whitelist. They dont want new game coverage cuz it means spoilers which is what they said before about their strict youtube policies. So you have to stick to their games if ya want the dough. ;)

  • There shouldn't be any whitelist! All games produced and published by Nintendo should be approved!

  • Here's my 2 cents. I don't know much about YouTube but hearing about this was a huge disappointment by Nintendo. I made a recent post about this. It's unfair for the uploader & for the consumer. Ok Nintendo, you want people to sign up for this? Then don't expect a lot of revenue from your sales. Free advertising is rewarding & these youtubers are helping your games sell.

  • Why don't gamers just get off YouTube before all game companies confuse you with wages, revenues and strict policies.

  • @JV I'll be sure to check that video out. I watched Totalbiscuit's thoughts on the matter, and while he's primarily a Pc gamer, he knows a lot about how youtube works so I recommend his video on it.
