Jarvis returned to his previous location on the balcony, tapping his foot, listening for sound cues that would tell him that the man has left the estate. The front doors of the estate swing open as the door creaks and slams. He turns to the staircase, however he is met with the eyes of his mother.

His mother carried a certain fairness with each step she took. Her hair was black, like that of her son's, however it was growing grey with age. Nonetheless, it was long and wavy, still maintaining its beauty. Her skin was noticeably darker than her son's, and she was slightly shorter than him - 5'8 while her son was 5'10.

His mother wore a dress of simple, yet elegant design. It was a light grey tint, with indigo trimming. Jarvis walked past his mother, sitting on a nearby wooden chair. "Who was that man?" He raised an eyebrow. "He's no one important," His mother replied, with a flick of her wrist. "But, I need to talk to you." Jarvis sighed, getting up from his chair, pacing back to the balcony. "What is it?"

His mother joined him on the balcony, looking on at the Daein capital of Nevassa. "You're nineteen years old, and you are still a bachelor. With the new coronation up and coming, we need to forge new alliances. Such alliances, at often times, must be sealed in matrimony." "So I am to be wed?" Jarvis paused to reflect upon her implications. "To who, exactly?"

"You will have to ask your father about that. He tells me he is hard at work, yet I am uncertain." Jarvis' expression grew snide. "Our house may hold no claim in this city, yet you would have me wed? I am not the most sought man in Nevassa. I would not do any wife justice."

His mother's voice raised, and she interrupted her son rudely. "That man I was speaking to downstairs was asking- no, begging for me to wed you to his daughter. Whether we hold a claim in this city or not, marriage grants power. Many in this city desire such power. If you left the estate once in a while, you would know such things." Jarvis remained silent, thoroughly chided.

Jarvis' mother turned her back to him, leaving the balcony. In a quiet, hushed tone, she left with a verbal "Your brother's wedding is shortly after the coronation. You will show your support." "What good is my support?" Jarvis replied lazily. "None, but it is expected of you. Your absences have already been noted."

Jarvis didn't want to be present at Jaime's wedding - he was older than him, stronger than him, better looking. Jaime had an established knighthood under the late 12th king - becoming a candidate for one of the Four Riders of Daein. Jaime was, by all accounts, the family favorite.

The coronation was a glorious one. Ashnard was crowned King, and the people looked forward to an age of prosperity to mend the wounds opened by the terrible plague. Jarvis reluctantly agreed to make an appearance at Jaime's wedding - much to everyone else's surprise. He learned that King Ashnard himself would be present to congratulate the couple on their special day.

The main dining hall was packed, with two long dining tables parallel to each other adjacent to a long, red carpet leading to a table reserved for Jaime and his bride to be. Jarvis approached the table where his brother sat, and he looked pleasantly surprised to see his younger brother. "Brother! I thought you'd take another night in the estate." Jaime chided.

"You have mother to thank for that." Jarvis chuckled. Jaime's appearance was clearly well-kept - his hair was brown, and evenly parted on each side. He was quite the contrast to his younger brother. While Jarvis was short and slim, Jaime was tall and muscular. The two shared a laugh as Jaime sat up from his seat and hugged his younger brother.

"What are you waiting for? Go join everyone else at the table." Jaime suggested. Jarvis took a long glare at the table before returning his attention to Jaime. "I'm no Leanai." Jaime grew quiet, and hushed. "Don't beat yourself up over that. Not here. Come on, join us for a drink." Jarvis sighed, eyeing the doors of the main hall, repeating his words. "I'm no Leanai."

Jarvis swung the main doors open, leaving the wedding ceremony. As he exited the building, he roughly bumped into someone on his way out. "Ah, my apologi-" His eyes grew wide as they locked to the man's face. He stood face to face with General Gawain, one of Daein's Four Riders in the service of King Ashnard. "No, it is I who must apologize." the General proclaimed.

Jarvis wondered why the General was so apologetic. He disregarded it, however. "You're General Gawain, aren't you? One of the Four Riders?" Jarvis asked, knowing the answer already. "My greatest accomplishment." Gawain replied. "And you... you're Lord Leanai's baseborn, aren't you?"

Jarvis scowled, and began to walk away from the general, turning his back. "Did I offend you? Sorry." The General sighed. Jarvis turned back to him, raising an eyebrow. "You are the baseborn, though." "Lord Leanai is my father." "And Lady Leanai is not your mother. Making you the baseborn." Jarvis felt offended, but he knew better than to walk away again.

"Let me give you some advice, baseborn." Jarvis looked up at the General, attentive and prepared. "Never forget what you are. The rest of the world certainly won't. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you." Jarvis' face went through various expressions. "The hell do you know about being a baseborn?" The General seemed to ignore the question and entered the main hall.

Several weeks prior to Jaime's wedding... Jarvis sat at the dining table of House Leanai, at the farthest seat on the table from Lord and Lady Leanai. It was considered an insult to seat a baseborn at the table with such esteemed Lords and Ladies to begin with - let alone raise one from birth.

Jarvis finished his meal with nary a word before leaving for his quarters. He shut his door behind him, and proceeded to do what he had normally done every night - read, write, and deliberate. His studies were rudely interrupted by his brother as he swung the door wide open. Jarvis looked at him, barely surprised. "Have I yet to teach you the meaning of a closed door in this estate, brother?"

Jaime chuckled. "You have much to teach me no doubt, but mother craves your attention." "She has odd cravings, our mother." "A family trait," Jaime poured a glass of wine from his brother's flagon. "Now, the Begnion senators are feasting at sundown." Jaime looked at Jarvis, who was ready to sigh. "Don't leave me alone with these people."

"Well, as you can see, I've begun the feast a bit early." Jarvis quickly grabbed the flagon from Jaime's hand, pouring his own goblet of wine. "And this will be the first of many courses." His words were nearly cut off by his sip of wine. "I thought you might say that. However, mother stressed that it was of absolute import." Those words sounded odd coming from Jaime's mouth, let alone mother's.
