Thoughts on SSB's competitive scene: SSB64 - Outdated, but still has short bursts of hype, and combos are varied. Balanced. Melee - Tons of advanced techniques, fast, and still fun to play, in both causally and competitively. Balanced. Brawl - Slow, unbalanced, removal of combos, fun casually, but not much competitively. Smash 4 - Fun, brings back combos, very balanced. Fun for both crowds.
