  • How and why?

  • You mean Great Apes, right? Kind of a big difference from monkeys. Most are probably smarter then the average politician. ...I've heard of the concept of non-human people before and had mixed feelings about it, but keeping a chimp in a zoo is hardly the equivalent of human slavery. On the other hand, chimps being kept in poor conditions is a real problem.

@Zach and Meta Chimpanzees, they proved that they are moral, can think and be creative, and some even have a higher pattern recognition, than most humans proving them to be a living, thinking, species. And some monkeys have recently set up aristocracies in the wild, including a system of slavery. Spooky.

  • Aristocracies? If you mean like social classes, lots of social animals have them. The more crude name is "pecking order". I'm an animal lover and I do believe in certain levels of animal rights, but I don't believe human rights and animal rights should overlap too much. Just because a chimp can be creative doesn't mean it can't be happy living a pampered life in captivity.

  • I guess my problem is that I don't respect chimps; I totally respect chimps. And gorillas, orangutans, elephants, dolphins, whales, and other intelligent, social animals. I just don't think there's much wrong with keeping them in captivity so long as they're treated humanely. Adequate space, food, and stimulation are what most animals need; not our very specific human concept of freedom.

Well, not a normal pecking order, these monkeys, which where raised by humans, found that in the wild other monkeys couldn't craft weapons and communicate by sign language like they could, so they attacked the other clans and enslaved them. Now the other clans sharpen the human-raised monkey's sticks for them and gather fruit for them as well.

And life in captivity is different than imprisonment, as zoos are much different than a regular cage. So zoos go on as per normal.

And yeah, they are creative, but they also managed to beat highly intelligent humans at puzzles and other iq based problems. I don't think they should overlap either, but the supreme court ruled it, so oh well. I for one, respect and love our new chimp overlords.

  • I'm really curious about about these monkey slavers now. Where'd you hear about it?

My brother mentioned it while he was visiting, but he made it sound interesting to say the least. I'm sure you can find some studies on the subject.
