This game's soundtrack kinda makes me want to remake some MK64 songs with this game's instruments.

…But don't you favour the SNES sound hardware? I would've thought you'd prefer Super Mario Kart's instruments over the GBA's.

  • I do prefer SNES's soundchip for the most part, but there are still several GBA soundfonts I really like, including this game's and the Kirby GBA soundfonts. I honestly don't like Super Mario Kart's soundfont that much. It has very few instruments, they're poorly sampled and it just sounds so... unnatural and unfitting for many of the songs it's used for. I prefer Super Circuit's soundfont.

  • This is probably going to sound weird to you after how many times I've praised SNES's soundfont, but I actually really like GBA's soundchip. It can produce amazing music if used right. DKC3 and Mother 3's soundtrack are great examples of that. I only didn't like SMA2 and DKC2's soundtracks because I know GBA can produce much better music, and they honestly sound bad even for a GBA, in my opinion.

  • But I'll give DKC2's soundtrack that it had some amazing sound quality for a GBA. Doesn't even suffer much from the fuzz heard in a lot of GBA soundtracks. Only the instruments sounded unfitting or really bad, and many things are inaccurate to the original soundtrack, which is why I didn't like it much.

Ah, so at least you do have positive opinions of the GBA soundchip. I can agree that Super Mario Advance 2's music is sometimes an octave too low, but Rayman Advance's music sounds almost nothing like the original. But even so, Super Mario Advance's music (among other things) makes it feel more like a true Mario game than the SNES version did. I suppose it's up to the developer's ability.

  • Yep, I do. Or an octave too high. The octaves are honestly what irritates me the most about SMA2's soundtrack. I'm like "It isn't supposed to be like that!", and I keep wondering WHY they changed them. In other SMA games the same instruments that were moved an octave in SMA2 weren't changed at all yet still goud, but I've already said this before.

  • But yes, there are definitely soundtracks that are worse, like Sonic Genesis (that crappy Sonic 1 port). While it actually does sound decent, they used General MIDI samples for almost all of the instruments which is one of the laziest things they could do.

  • Lazy? I LOVE General MIDI! I'd love to hear StreetPass Mii Plaza and Bravely Default music as .MID files. The "octave too high" issue actually made the Starman theme better for me. It's just the "octave too low in the fortress" that wasn't so good. When I then heard the Starman/Fail music in the SNES version, I thought they sounded too off-key, especially the latter. Just my opinion, though.

    Yeahs1
  • I like General MIDI as well. MIDI files can have a lot of soul if you just put a lot of effort into it. It's just the fact that they didn't bother to create unique samples but just threw in General MIDI samples that I find really lazy.

  • The instruments they changed the octaves of in SMA2 that annoyed me the most are probably the whistle and glockenspiel. The glockenspiel doesn't sound like glockenspiel anymore because of being too low, and the whistle just doesn't sound as good. I agree the Starman theme sounded good, though. I actually have it in my head sometimes.
