If you press the Home button on your 3DS at the perfect time, you can see the placeholder XX text to denote the number of Bonus Coins that Bear needs. The game very quickly replaces the XX text with the actual number, though, so it's easy to miss. A similar situation occurs when Bear tells you how many seconds you spent in his card game, except there are blank spaces instead of Xs.
