After much thought, I decided that the most useful mount for me is Ricky the boxing kangaroo c: It was a toss-up between him & Dmitri (although I wanted Moosh just because flying. squishy bear).

You have to finish the 2nd dungeon, Snake's Remains, and DO NOT go to Spool Swamp yet. You then have to go through the first portal to Subrosia, down to the Subrosian Dance Hall & dance with them successfully 8-12 times. They'll give you a strange flute. Then, you go into the East Woods (I believe) & walk around until you find Dmitri being attacked. Pay off the enemies, and the flute is his.
