There are certain quests tnat you must complete to unlock what is called an "Urgent Quest". The quests you have to complete are referred to as 'Key Quests'. I'm not 100% sure what all of them are but doing all the quests involving large monsters is a good idea. If you want a list of key quests, the Wiki has them as well as Kiranico.

And to actually answer your question (Sorry, I forgot to in my first comment) Completing the Urgent Quest will raise your Hunter Rank. After completing the HR7 Urgent Quest however, you will earn Hunter Rank Points (that increase your HR once you earn enough) for doing quests.

You have to be the one to host the urgent quest for your hr to raise after completing it.

There are two seperate 'sets', so to speak, of quests. One set is the solo-only campaign, while the other you can access in single/multiplayer. If you complete an Urgent Quest in the solo portion of the game, it will not count towards your next HR. You must be doing quests started from inside the Gathering Hall (located at the end of the walkway in Val Habaar, beside the departure gate) in order-

-to accumulate HRP/raise HR. And like Chris stated, YOU must be the one to post your Urgent Quest or else it will not raise your HR. In short: Only quests executed from within the Gathering Hall will boost your HR... Even if you are the only one in the Gathering Hall it will still raise your HR. :) If you have any other questions, or if I haven't helped at all, let me know and I'll try to help.
