What rated E means: A game that a person of any age can play due to its relatively light and friendly content. What some think it means: Its a game for kids, don't bother with it. What rated M means: A game only suitable for people above the age of 17 because of violence, blood, strong language, etc. What some think it means: This is a game the cool and hip people play. • It all boils down to the media and parents thinking that we cannot distinguish fiction from reality, which is frankly, a rather condescending thought.

my parents don't think that an m rated game is going to make me be bad.

  • Your parents are smart people then. You know, this makes me wonder something. Why do parents make a fuss about violent video games, but still buy their children action figures? You know, the ones that often have weapons and other tools of violence. Or at least they had that back when I was a kid, I don't know if that's the case anymore.

    Yeahs3
  • Pm, I wholly agree with you. Simply because it's showing violence doesn't mean all people are going to assume that they can do this.

    Yeahs1
  • If that were the case, then violent movies can make us bad as well. Oh wait there are people who actually believe that.

    Yeahs2
  • Now I won't deny violent games and movies can influence others into doing violent things. But to be fair, it's very unlikely they had a firm grasp on reality if they are influenced by them.

    Yeahs1
  • That's the exact point. Its not about the game, its about the player. But sometimes its easier and more convenient to point at popular scapegoats for the problem than to delve deeper into the individual.

    Yeahs2
  • It sure doesn't help matters that the moral guardians don't ever feel like admitting they're wrong and feel like judging everyone who buys the game. "You support GTA? You're helping promote violence!"

    Yeahs2
  • I hate that because it creates an awful misconception about gamers. Then again, mass media and moral guardians have done that for other mediums as well. Its just the way the society we live in is.

    Yeahs2
  • And then there's people like Jack Thompson, who think games are the source of all evil, and all gamers are no more than demons. Thankfully, no one really takes people like him seriously. Even the moral guardians think those kind of people are crazy.

    Yeahs2
  • I said a few posts back that the people who first played the first controversial games like Mortal Kombat and Doom are already in their late 20s to early 30s and how they turned out fine despite what the people of the time thought. But you don't see anyone point this out do you?

    Yeahs2
  • Nope. Because the naysayers just like to ignore that little fact because they realize it destroys their entire argument.

    Yeahs1
  • since ps3 came out apparently graphics mattered... that generation of gamers ruined gaming except nintendo. always remember gameplay matters not graphics

    Yeahs4
  • 10 years from now, we'll look back to today and say "Remember that moral panic about videogames back in the 00s? It was hilarious"

    Yeahs2
  • Thank you, aiden! *tosses cookie*

    Yeahs1
  • Prior to the Wii and PS3 era, all systems were more or less close to each other in terms of graphical capabilities. It was when Nintendo said the Wii wouldn't be as powerful as the competition when this became something others used against it.

    Yeahs3
  • And none are more prevalent complaining about it than the PC Master Race. Most that I've met on the internet act like elitists bragging about how awesome PCs are, the graphic capabilities, how much faster they are FPS (Frame per second) wise, and so much. They aren't all like that, but most I've met are.

    Yeahs1
  • Discussing PC gaming anywhere is bound to cause intense flame wars, which is why I never speak of it. Go to a Youtube comment section, of any game, bring this up and see how quickly everyone loses their mind.

    Yeahs3
  • Well, that is true. I've seen my fair share of wars simply because PC was mentioned.

    Yeahs1
  • The only reason why we can bring it up safely is because this site is mostly free of such people. It makes you appreciate this site a little more.
