    That was just part of the running gag of someone calling Mario something other than Mario. (Besides, Paper Mario can't talk, so it would be impossible for him to tell his last name.)

    Even so, it was likely a nickname, like when his Yoshi went by "Great Gonzales Jr." (Not to mention Paper Mario isn't canon.)
