I think in Robin's trailer, Captain Falcon was testing possible newcomers, and he was testing Chrom, but Lucina and Robin thought he was just mercilessly beating up Chrom. Cap realized that Lucina and Robin were better and allowed them to join instead. Hence Chrom's comment at the end.
