...Remember when I said a review for this game was coming shortly? ...That timeframe would be two months. Anyways, without further ado, a review of Wario's Woods!

  • This game would be one that was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System at the end of its lifespan, and it shows; the game could handle two different monsters, possibly with different mechanics of defeating them, a moving character, a moving ceiling, and a meter at the same time! Being dated, it's a bit pointless to talk about graphics, besides saying they were good for their time.

  • Now, onto the meat of this review, because Wario sure has lots of it... the gameplay! As you could probably tell, this is a puzzle game. But it works differently from your ordinary puzzle game; you control Toad, not a cursor, and your goal is to eliminate monsters with bombs before they, or Wario, traps you!

  • Making a match of 2 or more monsters plus a bomb of the same color will eliminate them from the playing field. Seems a bit simple, yes? That's where combos come in, and there's a really good reward system for performing them. See that meter in the top right? It's full, meaning Wario, who summons monsters, will replace Birdo. When a combo is made, like we see here...

  • ...The meter decreases, allowing you more time with Birdo, who only summons bombs to eliminate monsters with! The combos also raise the ceiling, and increase the meter when Wario is there, giving him less time to mess you up. These combos reward skillful manuvering of bombs to help clear the field much faster! Which gets me to my next point...

  • ...Multiplayer. Such a game based around skill based combos would be a good fit for player vs. player gameplay. In the original NES version, this was accessed from the VS mode option. For the 3DS download, you simply find another player, and initiate ”Start Download Play”. This allows two people with 3DSes to go at it with a round of Wario's Woods whenever, even if only one person has it!

  • There's also a mode (Type B) that has bosses in it, where you line up matches near the bosses' feet in order to damage them, which is fun. Overall, this game is worth the buy, and it allows for quite a few hours to spend blowing up monsters. This is Zach, signing off.
