Plus when you beat Zero Mission, you unlock the original NES version in the options, so its 2 for the price of 1.

I heard the VC version of Zero Mission had the original Metroid extra removed.

That's another reason why the original Metroid sucks in my opinion.

I wouldn't say it sucks, but Zero Mission greatly improves it. The thing that hinders the original Metroid is that it's superannuated, meaning its inferior compared to the advancements made over the years.

I find the controls of NEStroid to be overly stiff, and the lack of a map would have been tolerable IF everything didn't look the same.

Well the colors help with that. What the original is sorely lacking is yes, a map, a save feature (yea, I know it has a password system. Not as convenient), and the ability to shoot in any direction.

Lots of the things that suck about the original Metroid are the same things that made it challenging and fun. With no map and lots of rooms looking the same Zebes turns into a maze that's easier to get lost in. But you don't even need to use a map to finish Metroid it just takes a little mental effort. Not being able to keep the Ice Beam if you grab the Wave Beam adds a layer of depth too.

In technical terms, NES Metroid is inferior, but it WAS the first Metroid, and that was in the early days of the NES (1986). This game was the foundation that started this deep and wonderful franchise (even with dents in the armor). The lack of map is a con, but that didn't become standard until Metroid 3. And as said, it's an early NES game with program limitations. Older gamers will understand.

I've got love for NEStroid, just saying I held out all this time waiting for Zero Mission on Wii U because: 1. I already have my 3DS ambassador Metroid. 2. Now that I have Zero Mission, all I have to do is beat it, and BAM! NEStroid unlocked & I save some ca$h. I prefer Zero Mission, for reasons stated.

@ESHmael, exactly. I have great respect for the original, and I enjoy TRYING to get through it. But it IS superannuated, and Zero Mission greatly imoroves on it.

Eh to be honest even by NES standards Metroid has issues. Many areas look exactly the same and it can be quite annoying. Now Metroid 2 didn't have that as much. As for gameplay, when you can have games like the three Ninja Gaiden games on the NES, Metroid seems kind of slow paced. There are also glitches everywhere and some can be pretty bad. I have had to reset the game from getting stuck.
