More NX Rumors...

So according to a patent Nintendo filed, the NX may incorporate a system referred to as "Daisy Chaining" for system performance. What are your thoughts on this?

  • What? Now you need to scale your games? There go all the non-japanese 3rd party devs.

  • @Jerry: Not necessarily. Several popular PC games are scalable, meaning porting games to the NX may be as straightforward as porting to a PC (assuming the NX architecture isn't vastly different). Even if that were the case, 3rd Party Devs could put a cap at how much or how little the game could scale. You could release a game with certain requirements or a game that doesn't scale at all.

  • Wait, so could someone with bad wi-fi cause lag in a upscaled game, even when you're not playing online multiplayer?

  • Say Activision wants to release CoD on NX and don't feel like dealing with graphical scaling. They could make a straight port from the PS4/XB1 versions with identical graphical fidelity and framerate and just lock it there. This would likely require your portable to be plugged in or a certain amount of online "Daisy Chaining" in order to run, but that's better than not getting the games at all.

  • NX consoles with bad connections assist with less complicated things like weather effects or draw distance. Framerate (which dictates lag) is tied to consoles with good online connections or physical (wired) connections. From what I can tell, the only way lag might occur is if several "Daisy Chains" break simultaneously (meaning the consoles were turned on or you unplugged the wired connection).

  • Welp, I sure hope this means better online multiplayer, as it's kinda tedious to make a miiverse post just to start a room with strangers. And if online is a key part of the NX's core features, I hope it remains free....

  • @Jerry: I totally agree. This concept (assuming NX actually implements it) has a lot riding on online connections. Nintendo really needs to step their game up in terms of online infrastructure if they truly wish to implement this feature. As far as subscription fees, it seems unlikely; if anything YOU will be the one getting paid for the online services.

  • Personally, the more I'll stay on my Wii U, the more I'll be happy B-) The NX can come out 5 years later, I don't mind. The Wii U is way sufficient at this moment and big games will finally come out (Pokémon, TLoZ, StarFox, etc.) so please let us take our time, don't you ? ;-)

  • @Valentin: I feel the NX should come out late 2017. That'd give the Wii U the full 5-year lifespan that Nintendo consoles are known for.

  • Yeah I know this rule. But I think they can make this console live longer, for one time ! :-P Above all, I wonder and "fear" a bit if they make NX come out way before PS5 and next XBOX, because then, it will only be NX's successor at the same time as PS5's & cie, so Nintendo's ninth gen will be not at the same time as others. :-@ PS : not related, I don't have ANY Sony or Microsoft's system :-|

  • I doubt the PS5 or 4th Xbox will come out any time in this decade. Systems are at the point where they can update regularly to add more features and such; consoles are lasting longer. XB360 was from 2005-2013, and PS3 was 2006-2013; 8 and 7 years before a successor respectively. The only reason the Wii U needs to be replaced is because it's basically beyond saving at this point (sales-wise).

  • At the rate the Wii U is going, it's likely to sell even worse than the GameCube did. Yes StarFox Zero, Pokken Tournament, Zelda U, etc may cause temporary boosts in sales, but the gap between the Wii U's sales and its competitors is laughably huge. NX should launch 2017 imo in order to ensure Nintendo has a strong launch lineup for it and secures 3rd party support.

  • I hope my Miiverse profile will remain the same on NX, or at least, I want to say that if we had one on Wii U, we'll have the choice to keep it on NX. After all, the Miis were a good idea of the Wii and stayed on Wii U, so why Miiverse shouldn't stay on NX ?

I think it's all hype with the rumors. I don't expect the NX to be complicated at all.

  • @Fox McCloud: This isn't a rumor; Nintendo patented this technology. This post is merely speculation on whether or not NX will have anything to do with it.
