How do you usually make your characters? Where do you begin?

What do you start with first? Their appearance? Their personality? Their background and history? Their role and future? Would you say you make their appearance first and base their personality on that, or vice-versa? Do you want a certain role in a story and build from there?

  • Also, I previously explained how I come up with names, so regardless of what kind of character I create, their name generally comes last, if ever.

  • After I have the song, I take the genre its in (Pop, Rock, Electric, ect.)and apply it the what type of people would match that feel. I then take the title and also apply it to them through their personality or looks. While all that is happening, I think up scenes that match the characters and beat of the music. From there, the rest seems to fall in place.

  • I don't have or make many human characters, but the most time I have a simple idea of him/her. If I get inspiration for example from a movie the personality and story of the character becomes deeper and more interesting. (Sorry for my bad english)

  • I have one important character, who was planned to die at the end of the main story (I wanted a very emotional part at the end). But now I like him to much and I have to think about some new things for the story.

  • All thoughs ways you stated are great. I perfer basing my characters on cliches. The TV Tropes website helps with this expecially once I have my genre. Other times characters are based off real people, either people I've meet or famous people from movies, TV, comic, etc.

  • Usually I start out with appearance, mindless sketching until something really stand out to me. The name usually follows afterwards, names usually come quickly to me depending on appearance. Then comes personality. I dont quite give them a role til ive played around with them in all roles, finding what fits and what stand out as their traits

  • I start out my characters with personalities and their nature. A lot of what I shaped my characters are is based on the books I read, research about the Greek/Chinese Zodiac, and all the video games I've played over the years as well as future ones to come. Right now I'm working on the concept of Undertakers (that was when I was researching different psychopomps from different countries and most

    Yeahs2
  • of them work in pairs like Heibai Wuchang and Oxhead and Horseface from China). Anyway there are 13 Undertakers total with Zanagi Atlas as their leader (Amazi's twin brother). I don't wanna spoil the rest until I get my hands on Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam and Bravely Second. The Bros. Attacks and the Combo Attacks give me an idea of a Super Combo move that each assigned Undertaker pair uses in

    Yeahs2
  • battle. For Bravely Second, there's an Undertaker who's weapon of choice is a rapier while her partner uses two guns and since both of these weapons are new in that game, I can finally see how they can fight. I even came up with the name of their Shadows (aka Executioners- The word has a double mean for someone who executes a person and someone who uses their moves in a precise manner). That's all

    Yeahs2
  • I'm telling you until I get my hands on Bravely Second.

  • I always go for design first, i draw a mental rough sketch of what they should look like in my head, and then i usually start with the name next. After that i work on the story and background, and i build their personality around that.

    Yeahs3
  • I would say make a backstoty first, then base there apperance on it :)

  • Well the way I make characters is more projected through my words then my art so my characters usually start as a particular word I find that interests me like the word iridescent could be used for a more angelic character where as a more Demonic word such as Animosity would better be suited more towards a evil character then I move on and think of their Fears the fears help me completely...

    Yeahs2
  • understand their Personality and backstory such as how if one of my characters had a fear of fire I would give him a backstory based around this fear and then I make his role in his community from this I can discern his Appearance

    Yeahs2
  • I always get around to a name last, so my characters are rarely based on that. I'd say 9/10 times I think up the general plot of a story, outlining the preliminary and a genera. end goal. I tend to keep it fluid; as I go along and watch my characters grow and develop in the story, I decide their fates, and they are subject to change at any point. I write predominantly fantasy genre, sometimes--

    Yeahs2
  • dabbling in modern or futuristic, but not nearly as much as a typical medieval-type setting. The setting has bearing on a character's appearance, so I like to start with that along with their role in the story. After discerning that much, I can usually get an idea for how they need to look and I'll prepare a detailed character bio and backstory. At that point I begin the grueling naming process.

    Yeahs2
  • *general, not genera. - lol. I also wanted to add that I can't art... so I guess appearance doesn't have as much bearing for me. I favor simple characters and if they need something to set them apart I embellish their clothing or give them a scar. I tend to focus on one part of their appearance and make it shine, such as eyes or hair.

    Yeahs2
  • I usually start on the scenario they'll be in rather than looks or actual backstory. then i fill in the blanks as to why theyre there in the first place. then i doodle forever and never speak of it again because these things are usually born during times of intense emotion, so ill likely end up hating myself later.

  • Oh I wish I was here sooner. I've been meaning to tell somebedy my process. With me, I always, ALWAYS start with the emotion I want in the character. I say a few buzz-words, than work up an "inner voice" to the character. (By which I mean I try real hard to design the person's personality fitting in those buzz-words.) After that, I might work a little on their story, I might come up with...

    Yeahs0

  • ...a rough idea of their appearance. Normally it's the story first and foremost. Once I have that, everything else falls into place. (Although my character costume design process could use some work. And I put off naming the person for a loooooong time.)
