To begin my foray into analyzing Octarian civilization, I dive into Octotrooper Hideout, or as I like to think of it, the cave of leaning skyscrapers. These buildings are so tall, you can't see their bottom! Do Octarians work here? It certainly seems like a commercial district. In fact, this place carries a lot of the same corporate branding as Inkopolis! I wonder how that's possible?

  • Octotroopers are either single-armed, single-armed with a shield, or two-armed. The number of arms may denote an Octarian's power/rank, as the two-arms are much more threatening. It may be due to the fact that their vehicles have a slider button in addition to the joystick seen on all the vehicles. More limbs means more capabilities!

  • Correction: Shields are available for both single-armed and two-armed Octotroopers. Both types can also come with snorkel masks, which indicate that they'll hide in their own ink and ambush the player when he or she gets close.

  • This is a Power Egg. Power Eggs are a sort of currency in Octo Valley (at least for the Inklings that is). Interestingly, these eggs wiggle around as if there's still something alive inside! Why would the Octarians leave their eggs strewn across the Kettles completely unattended? What on Earth might the Inklings do with them? Eat them?

  • What I find interesting about Power Eggs is the circle of darker orange on them that resembles an iris or pupil, almost as if they're actually eyeballs! (It's not a reflection of light or shadow either, as each egg has its spot in a unique angle that stays put.) This lends credence to the belief that these things are alive. Whether or not they're Octarian eggs has yet to be confirmed.

  • Personally, Power Eggs remind me most of real-life cuttlefish eggs, which are round (as opposed to octopus and squids' teardrop-shaped eggs) and as they mature, they grow clear and allow the babies to see through them. Of course, it might just be the developers' artistic interpretation of Octarian or Inkling eggs, as it might be hard to have collectibles that always need to be attached to a wall.

  • As for what Inklings might do with them, we know of only one thing for certain: Power Eggs are used to upgrade the player's gear. The agents' arsenal only has ink as a common factor, so could it be that these eggs contain ink-bearing creatures, whatever they are, which are pulverized in order to make more ink for the Inklings' gear? Somehow, that sounds even worse than the Inklings eating them!

  • Maybe there's some sort of front for Power Eggs! Even though these things are used to 'make payments,' the regular Inkling currency is actual money. Perhaps there's a black-market for these Eggs. I mean, I don't know if it's been directly stated that it's Cap'n Cuttlefish who upgrades your gear. The Inkling Agents could be making trade-offs between the Eggs and advanced weaponry!

  • So you're suggesting that the player goes to the black market and trades out his/her gear for the same gear, only more powerful, with the Power Eggs as payment?

  • Well, I'm not exactly sure what may happen. All I do know is that I haven't seen any Power Eggs in any other place but Octovalley!
