Sakurai talks more about Cloud in Smash Bros.

We learned during an interview with Smash Dir. Masahiro Sakurai & Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura this week that... - Roughly 25 to 35% of Final Fantasy fighter requests were for Cloud. - Sakurai also said "We could have used Terra or Bartz, but I feel there would be some people who wouldn’t know who those characters are. * More in first comments...

  • Nomura - "When we first talked, I asked “are you sure you’re okay with Cloud?” He’s not a character from a new game, after all." Sakurai - "But on the other hand, if you think about who to add from Final Fantasy, it’s hard to come up with a choice that’s not Cloud."

  • So yeah Cloud is still a Beast. Sakarai did little to downplay Cloud being a monster. Only downside is his recovery without Limit Break. Can't wait for Bayonetta and Corrin next month M14

  • @FriskToad I wouldn't call him OP but at times it can be pretty difficult defending against his offense. He seems slightly unbalanced at 1st but you just have to learn his moveset to better defend against him M14

  • (don't have Cloud so not sure about the moveset but...) Cloud's B wave looks hard to dodge but a roll or jump can help, and his aerial game is his weak point. Limit break B is powerful, so try not to stay horizontally aligned. Side B is best while recovering so instead be ready to dodge and counter it. Don't stay too close, Cloud is pretty weak at long range compared to some.

  • @Warren: Marth and Roy were originally intended to be only in the Japanese version. They only made it in the international versions at all because playtesters demanded that they be kept. FE may be a major franchise now, but at the time, they were very lucky to find an audience overseas.

  • Furthermore, VII was instrumental in letting the RPG genre gain a mainstream foothold at all in the West. I, IV (II), and VI (III), though better-known now thanks to Dissidia, were niche titles at best in their original release.

  • Cloud was also the "Sonic" of the fifth video game generation; he's the one who gave Nintendo the most direct trouble and is a shining example of how Nintendo shot themselves in the foot at that time. VII was originally going to be on the N64, but Nintendo's insistence on withered technology damaged their ties with Square and most third parties. So, Cloud does play a role in Nintendo's history.

  • I can't help but feel Sakurai's judgement of Cloud's current state is a bit misguided. Cloud does not have a lot of lag at all, he IS very fast. The punishment windows are just tiny. It's far too easy for Cloud to just recklessly throw out attacks, and almost everything KO's at around 120% as well. I honestly think he was poorly executed.

  • Terra still would have been a better choice due to the game she was in actually originating on a Nintendo console It would have been cool for Crono to be in though, but it probably would have never happened due to how badly SE neglects Chrono Trigger
